Introduction to VeggieTales

Since its inception in the early 90’s, VeggieTales has been a beloved children's show for kids of all ages. It teaches children important life lessons and values through fun and entertaining animated vegetables who adventure through various fun tales, often featuring a reimagining of Bible stories.

VeggieTales instills values like honesty, kindness, and forgiveness—all framed within biblical narratives. It’s a great show that keeps kids entertained while teaching crucial life skills and values that will persist throughout their lives.

Since VeggieTales has been running since the 90s, and some works are still being produced to this day, we figured it would be worth diving into some of the different series that have been created over the years.

Different VeggieTales Series Explained

Because VeggieTales is such a long-running series, there’s quite a bit of confusion about the different series that have been created over the years. From originals to direct to DVD series to movies and shows on Netflix, VeggieTales has been through many different iterations over the years.

Below we break down each VeggieTales series, including when it was first released, how to watch episodes from that series today, and some fan-favorite episodes.

Original VeggieTales (1993-2015)

The original VeggieTales series began in 1993 and was produced by Big Idea Entertainment. The series consisted of 50 episodes spread over 22 years! The first episode was "Where's God When I'm S-Scared?", released on December 21st, 1993, and the last episode was “Noah's Ark”, released on March 3rd, 2015.

Fun fact! “Noah’s Ark” is the only episode of the original series to use the new more modern character designs, which were carried over into “In the House” and “In the City” - all of the other 49 episodes in the original VeggieTales cartoon series used the character designs from the early 1990s.

One of the best and most popular episodes from this time is “The Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Samson's Hairbrush”, which features the “Where is my Hair Brush” song which kids LOVE. It’s also the first episode to feature Larry the Cucumber’s alter-ego, the “Minnesota Cuke”.

VeggieTales on TV: Dave and the Giant Pickle

VeggieTales on TV! (2006-2009)

VeggieTales on TV was originally aired on NBC from 2006 through 2009, and was later re-released for syndication in 2015. This spin-off series features our favorite characters Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, and takes place in Bob’s house. It occasionally features Silly songs with Larry and other short interludes.

This series featured family favorite episodes such as “Dave and the Giant Pickle”, a beloved re-telling of the David and Goliath Bible story.

VeggieTales in the House (2014-2016)

VeggieTales in the house is the first adaptation of VeggieTales to be produced directly for the streaming platform, Netflix. It features many of the original cast and crew, but uses new character designs for each of the characters, which was met with some criticism.

Some reviewers like the Christian Examiner questioned whether the show would be faithful to the Christian themes of the original series, and some called the faith-based messages “superficial”. The general review consensus seems to be that parents and kids enjoyed the original series much more.

The series featured four seasons, and was followed by VeggieTales in the City in 2017.

VeggieTales in the House was removed from Netflix in 2022, but some episodes are available on AppleTV and Amazon.

You can find a full list of VeggieTales in the House episodes here.

VeggieTales in the City (2017)

VeggieTales in the City was the second VeggieTales series to be produced by Netflix and consisted of two seasons, both published in 2017. It continued to feature the original voice actors for Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, and had the same character designs as “In the House”.

The series was met with similar criticism as the first Netflix production, as kids and parents alike weren’t big fans of the new character designs.

The series was removed from Netflix in 2023, but is still available for streaming on Amazon, AppleTV, and YouTubeTV.

The VeggieTales Show

The VeggieTales show was a revival of the original VeggieTales series, produced by Universal and TBN, and featured many of the original crew and cast. It also revived the original character designs with slight updates, and debuted in 2019.

This return to the original character designs, alongside a refreshed focus on telling Bible stories in a way kids can understand, led to renewed interest in the series.

The first episode premiered on Christmas Day in 2019, titled “The Best Christmas Gift”. This episode plus all of the VeggieTales show is available for streaming here.

This revival of the show became a fan-favorite for parents and their kids and debuted exclusively for one year on Yippee.tv, and is now available for streaming on Yippee.tv!

VeggieTales: Heroes of the Bible

VeggieTales: Heroes of the Bible is a DVD set that was originally released in 2003 as VHS tapes, and then released in 2008 & 2009 as DVDs. Unlike the other series listed here, this set isn’t a stand-alone series, and instead is a compilation of stories from previous VeggieTales series.

Each volume contained a set of three important VeggieTales episodes, featuring various Bible stories that follow a general theme.

The three volumes were:

Volume 1: Lions, Shepherds and Queens (Oh My!), featuring:

  1. Daniel and the Lion's Den (from Where's God When I'm S-Scared?)
  2. Dave and the Giant Pickle
  3. Esther... The Girl Who Became Queen

Volume 2: Stand Up, Stand Tall, Stand Strong!, featuring:

  1. The Story of Flibber-o-loo (from Are You My Neighbor?)
  2. Rack, Shack and Benny
  3. Josh and the Big Wall!

A Baby, A Quest, and the Wild, Wild West!

  1. The Ballad of Little Joe
  2. Babysitter in DeNile (from Duke and the Great Pie War)
  3. Moe and the Big Exit

This series is a great place to start for parents who want to teach their kids about the Bible through fun stories with our favorite vegetable heroes! The DVD set can still be purchased on Amazon, or streamed as individual episodes on Yippee.tv.

VeggieTales Movies

Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie was released in 2002 and features a creative retelling of the Biblical story of Jonah. Kids will learn the power of being compassionate and offering others second chances, just as God does. This movie is available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video.

The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie was released 2008 and features three lazy wannabe pirates who go back in time to rescue a royal family from an evil tyrant. It teaches that heroes don’t need to be tall, strong, or handsome to be the good guy! The movie is available for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime video, as well as YouTube TV and AppleTV.

There are two other movies planned or in the works, such as LarryBoy, set to be released in 2026.

The Bob and Larry Movie, which would tell the origin story of VeggieTales, was also planned at one point in time, but has been put on hold and does not have an announced release date. Creator Phil Vischer says “it will hopefully be produced in the near future”
