The Most Important VeggieTales Characters

The Most Important VeggieTales Characters
11:17

VeggieTales is full of iconic characters that kids love and are instantly recognizable by their simple, creative designs. From icons like Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber to lesser-known characters like Madame Blueberry - VeggieTales is chock-full of fun characters who adventure through stories teaching valuable lessons to kids.

In this article, we detail some of the most important characters in VeggieTales, from protagonists to villains and everything in between. We’ll also review some of the character parodies played during story segments of the show, which add lots of depth and silliness to the iconic series.

Introduction to VeggieTales Characters

The characters in VeggieTales are anthropomorphized vegetables who tell stories and present lessons from classic Bible stories in a way that kids understand and love. Due to the format of the show, many of the main characters in VeggieTales play multiple characters throughout the series. For example - Bob and Larry (our main protagonists) present an introduction and conclusion to each episode as themselves, and then play other characters inside the story sections of each episode. Some VeggieTales characters also have alter-egos where they play an alternate character for the majority of the episode - such as a superhero or adventurer.

Comprehensive List of Main Characters in VeggieTales

Here’s our detailed list of the VeggieTales character names, personalities, VeggieTales cast and voice actors, and more!

Bob the Tomato

Bob the Tomato

Bob the Tomato is one of the two main characters of VeggieTales, and is the host of the show. He introduces each episode alongside Larry, and presents a conclusion (often accompanied by a Bible reference) at the end. He’s a much more serious character when compared to Larry, and tries his hardest to convey good values and morals to kids.

Bob is voiced by Phil Vischer, and narrates and plays many characters throughout the story segments of many episodes. Bob’s character was inspired by Kermit the Frog and Mr. Rogers.

Bob has a superhero alter-ego: Thingamabob, but this character isn’t seen nearly as often as Larry’s superhero alter-ego.

Larry the Cucumber

Larry the Cucumber

Larry is the second main character of VeggieTales, and co-hosts the show with Bob. He’s much more child-like and silly when compared to Bob’s serious nature, and can be a bit scatterbrained at times. Larry is often likened to the kids who Bob is trying to help, and frequently learns the same lessons that children learn.

He also hosts a fan-favorite segment of every VeggieTales episode: Silly Songs with Larry! This recurring interlude is in the middle of most VeggieTales episodes, and frequently features Larry and friends performing a musical number about some very silly and funny topics.

Larry also has an alter-ego: LarryBoy, who appears in several episodes of VeggieTales as a stand-alone character.

Larry is voiced by VeggieTales co-creator Mike Nawrocki.

Junior Asparagus

Junior Asparagus

Junior Asparagus is a character in VeggieTales who co-stars in many episodes. He’s a small asparagus, portrayed as a very curious 5-year-old boy who frequently finds himself in a tough spot due to his curiosity. He’s often seen in a yellow hat with a red brim, and is in many of the original VeggieTales episodes, most “LarryBoy” episodes, and a wide range of episodes in later series such as The VeggieTales Show.

He has several alter-egos, including a superhero in training “Ricochet” in "The League of Incredible Vegetables”, and “Junior Jetpack” in later series.

Is Junior Asparagus a boy or a girl?

Because he’s so young and is voiced by a woman - either Lisa Vischer in the original series or Tress MacNeille in VeggieTales in the House and VeggieTales in the City - some people aren’t quite sure if Junior Asparagus is a boy or a girl. The VeggieTales character Junior Asparagus is, in fact, a boy - so if your kids ask you can now tell them the answer with confidence!

Laura the Carrot

Laura the Carrot

Laura the Carrot is Junior Asparagus’ best friend. She’s a carrot with freckles and blonde-yellow hair in pigtails, and had her first major appearance in the episode Rack, Shack and Benny of the original series. She’s seen occasionally throughout VeggieTales as a supporting character, and is seen frequently in LarryBoy episodes and a wonderful Christmas episode: Saint Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving.

She’s also seen frequently in later series episodes, and has been voiced by 7 different voice actors over the years!

Madame Blueberry

Madame Blueberry

Madame Blueberry is a French blueberry who first appears in the episode named after her character, Madame Blueberry. She has a heavy French accent, and is one of the only characters in VeggieTales seen with makeup, fancy clothes, and jewelry - which plays along with her theme of a vain character who struggles with being thankful or appreciative.

Is Madame Blueberry French or British?

Strangely, in the Netflix adaptations of VeggieTales (in the house and in the city), Madame Blueberry is portrayed with a British accent and likes stereotypical British things like tea - including living in a teapot! Despite this, these series still considered her to be French - which led to some criticism among fans. Madame Blueberry is a French character in all of the VeggieTales series, despite her British accent in the Netflix adaptations. When she returned in The VeggieTales Show, she was again portrayed as a properly French blueberry.

Petunia Rhubarb

Petunia Rhubarb

The VeggieTales character Petunia Rhubarb is a red-headed rhubarb with a fun personality and a kind nature. She’s one of the core protagonists in VeggieTales, and is seen in episodes where values like empathy, self-worth, and inner beauty are prominent. She also co-stars with Larry in many episodes, including as a reporter and as her superhero alter-ego Vogue in some LarryBoy episodes.

She was first seen in the episode Duke and the Great Pie War, which you can watch here.

Mr. Lunt

Mr. Lunt

Mr. Lunt is frequently considered a villain in the show, but he’s more of an antagonist who provides conflict to our primary characters, and redeems himself towards the end of many episodes. He appears in 12 episodes of VeggieTales and is voiced by Phil Vischer with a Hispanic/Spanish accent.

What Vegetable is Mr. Lunt in VeggieTales?

While Mr. Lunt is often confused with an onion or potato in VeggieTales, he’s actually a decorative gourd according to creator Phil Vischer. Mr. Lunt is also frequently described as a Spanish gourd.

The French Peas

The French Peas

The French Peas consist of three main characters in VeggieTales, but are joined by several other French Peas in various episodes throughout the series. The Peas have French accents and perform ‘backstage’ meta-roles as well as comic-relief characters in various episodes. They’re seen in episodes such as Madame Blueberry, Lyle the Kindly Viking, Twas the Night Before Easter (where they have their own Silly Song!), and more.

Archibald Asparagus

The VeggieTales character of Archibald Asparagus is a serious, stuffy, British gentleman who plays many of the more dignified characters in the show. He’s seen frequently throughout the series criticizing Larry’s Silly Songs as “far too silly”, but later relents and even has his own Silly Song “The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo”, seen in the VeggieTales episode Tomato Sawyer and Huckleberry Larry's Big River Rescue.

He also has an alter-ego as LarryBoy’s butler Alfred - a parody of Batman’s butler. Archibald Asparagus also narrates many Bible story segments throughout VeggieTales.

VeggieTales Villains and Antagonists

VeggieTales has several villains and antagonists throughout the series, and some characters are portrayed as misguided and frequently redeemed by the end of the episode. These VeggieTales Villains aren’t truly bad guys, and sometimes even help out our friendly vegetables despite their dour demeanor.

Mr. Nezzer

Mr. Nezzer is a parody of Ebenezer Scrooge and is a businessman who’s always seen in formal wear, and is appropriately egotistical and money-obsessed. He’s a villain in VeggieTales in several episodes, but is sometimes redeemed towards the end in episodes such as "Rack, Shack & Benny" - which features the catchy but controversial song “The Bunny Song”.

The Bunny Song had controversial original lines of “I won't go to church, And I won't go to school!” and “I don't love my mom or my dad”, which got some complaints from parents because the song was so catchy, kids were singing it without realizing they shouldn’t be singing the “bad guy” song!

Mr. Lunt

Mr. Lunt is often portrayed as a sidekick or assistant to Mr. Nezzer, and as such was considered a villain in the original VeggieTales. He too is frequently redeemed by the end of episodes, but also plays antagonistic roles in various story segments of the show - such as in Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen.

Dr. Flurry

Dr. Flurry is a gourd who first appeared as a super-villain in “The League of Incredible Vegetables”, and was a mad scientist who tried to freeze other vegetables with their fears. He has a German accent and wears a lab coat in traditional villain fashion :) In later episodes of The VeggieTales Show, he returns as a friendly contributor of inventions to the protagonists.

Motato

Motato is a VeggieTales super-villain who appears in several LarryBoy episodes throughout the series. He’s aided by his radish minions and wreaks havoc on the various citizens of episodes of VeggieTales in the House and VeggieTales in the City. He too is redeemed towards the end of the series through a friendship with Laura Carrot.
